Workplace safety tips for restaurant workers

On Behalf of Todd Miller Law LLC | Feb 5, 2024 | Workplace Safety |

The restaurant industry is notorious for its fast-paced and sometimes hazardous working conditions. As a restaurant worker, it is very important to prioritize your safety and well-being.

By following a few simple guidelines, you can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and injuries in the workplace.

Sharp objects, slips and fires

Knives, slicers and other sharp objects are commonly used in restaurant kitchens. To avoid accidents, always handle these tools with caution. Use appropriate cutting techniques and ensure that your knives are sharp to minimize the risk of slipping. When not in use, store sharp objects in designated areas, preferably with safety guards or covers.

Slippery floors and cluttered walkways can lead to accidents and falls. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that falls represented 18% of nonfatal job-related injuries that led to missed work during 2020. To maintain a safe working environment, clean up spills immediately, use caution signs to warn others and wear appropriate footwear with non-slip soles. Also, kitchens are susceptible to fires due to the presence of open flames, hot equipment and flammable materials. Protect yourself and your colleagues by regularly inspecting and maintaining kitchen equipment to prevent electrical malfunctions.

Safe lifting and protective equipment

Restaurant workers often engage in physically demanding tasks that involve lifting heavy objects, such as boxes, trays or kegs. To avoid strains or injuries, bend your knees and use your leg muscles, not your back, to lift objects. When carrying heavy loads, hold them close to your body to maintain balance. Additionally, wearing the right protective equipment helps protect you from potential hazards. Some common examples in a restaurant setting include closed-toe shoes, heat-resistant gloves and safety goggles or face shields.

Prioritizing workplace safety is essential for both employers and employees in the restaurant industry. By following these easy-to-understand tips, you can create a safer and healthier environment for yourself and your colleagues. Remember, safety should always be a top priority, ensuring that you can focus on delivering excellent service and enjoying your work without unnecessary risks.
