Common hazards for tree trimming occupations

On Behalf of Todd Miller Law LLC | Feb 19, 2024 | Workplace Accidents |

Working as a tree trimmer can be a rewarding job, but it also comes with its share of hazards. From electrical risks to falls, there are many ways an injury could happen in this profession.

It is important for tree trimmers to be aware of these risks and take precautions to stay safe while on the job.

Fall risks

Climbing tall trees or using aerial lifts to reach branches can put workers at risk of falls. Tree trimmers need to use proper safety equipment, such as harnesses, ropes and helmets, to prevent accidents. Additionally, they should receive thorough training on how to safely climb trees and operate aerial lifts.

Falling debris hazards

When trimming trees, branches can unexpectedly break off and fall, posing a danger to tree trimmers below. Workers must ensure clearance on the ground before they begin working to avoid putting others at risk of injury.

Electrocution risks

Electrical hazards are a concern, especially when trimming trees near power lines. Contact with live wires can result in serious injury or even death. Tree trimmers should always assume that power lines are live and take precautions to maintain a safe distance from them. They should also have training on how to identify and work around electrical hazards.

Equipment dangers

Working with chainsaws, wood chippers and other tools can lead to cuts, lacerations and crushing injuries. Tree trimmers should receive thorough training on how to safely operate and maintain equipment, as well as how to recognize and address potential hazards.

Tree trimming can be a hazardous occupation. With proper precautions, workers can minimize the risks and stay safe on the job. By staying vigilant and aware of potential hazards, trimming professionals can continue to enjoy the rewards of their work while keeping themselves and others safe from harm.
